- UCAIR Petition
- Talking Points
- Times
- &Why are we petitioning for collective
- bargaining?
- 1) To have a Voice in our
- ,affairs; 2) To prevent arbitrary changes by
- ,UC; 3) To bargain for better pay, hours and
- working conditions.
- Who is coordinating this effort?
- &Generations of UC residents have been
- +working through the California Association
- )of Interns & Residents (CAIR), and local
- (Chapters at UC Med Centers, to get past
- ,legal hurdles to make this election happen.
- )UCAIR is run by residents, for residents.
- What is our timeline, and what
- happens when we get enough
- signatures?
- We hope to get enough
- .signatures on our petition by the end of this
- ,year, and have an election scheduled in the
- +Spring of 1996. The more residents who are
- )involved in the petitioning process, the
- .sooner we'll have an election and negotiate a
- contract.
- What happens after we win the
- #election for representation rights?
- gelected team of UC residents, backed by UCAIR professionals, will negotiate a contract covering all UC
- residents.
- %What can be included in the contract?
- 9 Hours, call schedules, patient care standards, resident
- fstaffing, working conditions, salary, extra pay for extra call, guaranteed leaves and days off/month,
- nancillary staffing/services, benefits, advance notice of program cutbacks/closures, free meals, parking, call
- Hrooms, fair due process and grievance procedures, and many other issues.
- Process for collecting Cards
- Who can sign the petition?
- > Any resident or fellow who spends any time on the UC payroll.
- 1What is the best process for securing signatures?
- 1 Make a brief presentation to an individual or a
- igroup. A group facilitates the collection of larger numbers more quickly. Our experience is that those
- iwho take cards with them very seldom send them in, so try to answer all questions and get the signatures
- Lin person. If someone refuses to sign, try to find out why and make a note.
- %What are the most frequent questions?
- 4 Does my signature commit my vote either way? (Your
- dsignature is a commitment for change. Of course, no one can tell you how to vote in a secret ballot
- _election.) Do I have to be a dues paying member to sign the petition? (NO) Are signatures kept
- _confidential? (YES) Can I help? (YES!) [Tough questions?-call the UCAIR office at 800-4MD-CAIR]
- After you get a signature:
- l If someone expresses support, ask if he/she would circulate cards to colleagues, or give you a contact
- who might want to help.
